What I actually carry

People on the tours always ask about the bag. It is smaller than they expect.

Vancouver

Every tour starts with the same question, usually at the first breakfast: what is in the bag? The honest answer is less than most people bring.

Two camera bodies, because one will fail at the worst moment. Three lenses: a wide zoom, a standard prime and a long zoom for compressing mountains. A light tripod, a few filters I rarely use, spare batteries in an inside pocket where they stay warm.

The things that matter more

Good boots, a waterproof that fits over a backpack, and a head torch. Most missed photographs I know of were missed because someone was cold, wet or walking back in the dark too early.

The rest is attention. That weighs nothing, and it is the part that takes longest to pack.
