Why the wall is filed by the hour

Sorting twelve years of photographs by place told me nothing. Sorting them by time of day told me how I work.

Written in

Vancouver

For years my archive was sorted by country and client, like everyone's. It was useful for invoices and useless for anything else.

Last winter I sorted every keeper by the hour it was taken, ignoring where. The result surprised me. Two thirds of the work I like happened in four hours of the day, split between first light and the last hour before dark.

Opening on your hour

The wall on the home page opens on the hour you are in now. If you visit at breakfast, you see my mornings. If you visit late, you see blue hours and stars. It is a small idea, but it makes the archive feel alive, and it changes what people ask me about.

Clients have started booking around it, too. A hotel asked last month for "your seven o'clock", which is the best brief I have had in a while.
